GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Research vessel "Teknik Perdana". Year of discovery: 2007. History: Named from the meranti, a hardwood with soft characteristics. It has a straight grain with few colour variations, blending from reddish to golden brown with grey and yellow highlights. In Malaysia, the meranti is used in a wide variety of applications such as joinery, newel posts, handrails, furniture and panelling.
