GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2004. History: Named from the Batino (Alstonia macrophylla), a species of tree that is found all over the Philippines, most especially in humid areas like Laguna, Mt. Palay-palay in Cavite and in Palawan. It is a medium to large tree, reaching a height of 25m, with oblong leaves and small yellowish white flower. Its wood is used for furnitures, while other parts such as the bark and leaves have medicinal uses. |
