GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: French research vessel "L'Atalante". Year of discovery: 1996. History: Named from Matahourua, the canoe of Kupe, who is credited as being the first Polynesian to discover New Zealand. The long shape of the ridge is likened to that of a canoe.
