GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: French research vessel "L'Atalante". Year of discovery: 1999. History: Named from its geographical position as the feature is located south of the township of Nelson, near the mouth of the Glenelg River, in SW Victoria State, Australia. The township was named after the ship "HMS Lady Nelson", an armed survey vessel commissioned in 1799 and used for explorations in the area in the early 19th century. |
