Additional information (en): This is a low, broad and elongated feature in the Tasman Sea. It projects northwards from Cape Farewell on the northwest coast of the South Island of New Zealand towards Cape Egmont on the west coast of the North Island. Name adopted from the NZGB Gazetteer. Minimum depth (m): 70. Maximum depth (m): 100. Total relief (m): 30. Dimension/size: 80 km x 78 km. |

GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: First appeared as Farewell Rise on Oceanic Bathymetry Series (OBS) chart 'Cook' in 1991. Altered to Onetahua Rise to restore the original Maori name of the associated land feature, Farewell Spit. "Onetahua" means 'sand hills'. |
