GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Nathaniel B. Palmer". Year of discovery: 1996. History: Named after Edgar Waite (1866-1928) a leading ichthyologist and member of the 1911 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. He took soundings and did dredging between Tasmania and Antarctica. A major work of Waite was 'Fishes of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition' (1916), a domain where he was a world authority.
