GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: British Royal Research Ship "Discovery". Year of discovery: 2022. History: Named after Captain Rodney Young (1963-2017), the first Saint Helenian Captain of the Service Ship, the RMS "St. Helena", who was well loved and respected by the local community. Throughout his career, Captain Young demonstrated hard work, dedication, courtesy and compassion. He was a mentor who was instrumental in the development of many maritime careers, a friend with a big heart and a unique sense of humor. Captain Young possibly navigated the area of the new seamount many times without even knowing it existed. Captain Young was an ambassador for the island, receiving an MBE in recognition of his dedication and commitment. He passed away as an active seaman at the top of his field while still in service to St. Helena. |
