History: The word "Ashok" is derived from the Sanskrit language, which means "one who has no grief". The word gained prominence through Emperor Ashok, who ruled the Indian subcontinent from approximately 268 to 232 BCE. Emperor Ashok is remembered for his efforts to spread the teachings of Buddhism across his empire and beyond. Emperor Ashok's reign saw early examples of environmental conservation and sustainable resource management. He enacted policies to protect forests, wildlife, and natural resources. The name "Ashok" can inspire similar values of conservation and stewardship toward marine habitats and biodiversity.
