History: Named from the Bagtikan tree, also known as Parashorea malaanonan. This tree is a prominent native species that grows in the eastern part of the Philippines. It is considered one of the light red Philippine mahogany trees and is commonly referred to as white lauan in the market. The Bagtikan tree can grow to be 35 to 40 meters tall and has a flat and spreading crown that allows it to outgrow its surroundings. It is primarily found in primary woods at low elevations and is well-known for its superior wood quality. It is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species because it is endangered. |
