GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2004. History: Named from the "ilang-ilang" tree (Cananga odorata), a medium-sized tree that can reach 40 meters tall and 45 centimeters in diameter. It has an irregularly formed crown, and its fragrance can boost and elevate the mood. Ylang-ylang is the Spanish spelling of the Tagalog word ilang-ilang, a reduplication of the term "ilang" meaning "wilderness." This relates to the tree's natural habitat. |
