GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2005. History: Named from the “Kalaw”, local name of the Rufous Hornbill (Buceros hydrocorax), a bird species only found in the Philippines and primarily inhabit evergreen forests. The Kalaw is a large species of hornbill with a black face, dark brown wings and a huge bill. The Kalaw eats fruits, seeds, insects, and centipedes. It has been classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2020. |
