GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2004. History: Named from the Kamagong (Diospyros blancoi), a tree species in the Philippines that can reach heights of up to 20-25 meters. It produces edible fruit known as 'Mabolo' or 'Velvet apple' that has a spherical to slightly elongated shape and a rough, brownish skin that feels velvety when touched. These fruits are commonly found in pairs on opposite sides of a branch. The Kamagong tree's wood is highly valued and has a long history of various use. The wood, known for its solidity, blackness, and durability, is ideal for making furniture, cabinets, and decorative pieces.
