GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2005. History: Named from the Katala, local name of the Philippine Cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia). This is a small white bird that has a red and yellow tail and is an endemic species of the Philippines. Its voice is said to be loud and harsh. The bird can be found in lowland primary and secondary forests throughout the country. The species has been classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2017. |
