GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Shoyo". Year of discovery: 2006. History: Named after Dr. Jiro NAKA (1956-2021), a marine geologist at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) between 1986 and 2006. He workedon ocean floor volcanology of the Izu-Ogasawara (Izu-Bonin) area, Okinawa Trough and Hawaii, makingcontributions to understanding the volcanological characteristics of theseareas. He mainly used the submersible Shinkai 2000 as his research toolto conduct ocean floor volcanological study.
