GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2005. History: Named from the Puñalada, local name of the Mindoro Bleeding Heart (Gallicolumba platenae), a bird species endemic to the island of Mindoro, Philippines. The Puñalada prefers to live in primary and secondary lowland forests with a closed canopy and dry substrates on gentle slopes. Unfortunately, a large portion of its habitat has been destroyed due to deforestation and the species has been classified as critically endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species in 2016. |
