GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Robert D. Conrad". Year of discovery: 1973. History: Named after Prof. George Satander Sá Freire (1951-2022), a Brazilian professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) where he worked with excellence for 40 years. He was one of the pioneers of marine geology in northeastern Brazil and dedicated his life intensely to research and training of human resources. Prof. Satander founded the Laboratory of Marine and Applied Geology (LGMA) in the Department of Geology at UFC. He coordinated the Brazilian Marine Geology and Geophysics Program (PGGM) from 1997 to 2001 and 2007 to 2011, and participated in several national and international programs/projects such as JOPPS, Revizee, Geomar, Geocosta, Remplac, Granmar, contributing actively to the expansion of scientific knowledge on the Brazilian Continental Margin.
