8th Advanced Phytoplankton Course - Taxonomy and Systematics

Event Description:
The course aims at training and upgrading qualified students in the identification of phytoplankton species. The course will provide an updated theoretical background for the morphology, taxonomy, classification and phylogeny of the most important phytoplankton groups. It will consist of theoretical and practical sessions, with examination of a broad collection of fixed, live and slide material provided by the faculty and by the students. Relevant techniques will be presented.

The Course will be open to 20 students. Criteria for selection of participants will include their previous experience in phytoplankton taxonomy (min. 4 years), possible role as trainers in their respective countries and involvement in ecological research and monitoring programmes.

Applications must arrive by e-mail to not later than 10th November 2004.
Acceptance will be notified within 15th December 2004.

  • Theoretical classrooms on general taxonomic features of marine phytoplankton
  • Practical classrooms on light microscopy (LM) identification
  • LM techniques
  • Scanning (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) techniques and observations
  • Phytoplankton cultivation techniques
  • Serial dilution technique
  • Molecular Phylogenetic methods
  • Integrative seminars on specific taxonomic issues
