Training course on biodiversity, phylogeny and ecology of Porifera

Location: Marseille, France
Event Type: Training Course
Event Date: 2005-07-17
End Date: 2005-07-30

Event Description:
Sponges are among the most common organisms of hard substrates, from the littoral zone to the deep-sea. They have an economic potential beyond their fundamental roles in marine ecological processes. They are the sources of potential pharmacologically active substances that are currently of major interest for pharmaceutical industry. In spite of this, sponge systematics is generally perceived as appallingly difficult. These difficulties stem partly from the particular characteristics of the sponges themselves, but also from the inadequacies and inconsistencies of the taxonomic framework.

COM-DIMAR, thanks to its privileged location at the Mediterranean seaside - a hotspot of sponge diversity - and its 40 years tradition of studies on sponge taxonomy, is the ideal place to organize an advanced training course aimed at postgraduates. The course will be addressed to young scientists who wish to start or improve their knowledge on sponges for taxonomical, biological and ecological purposes.

Official languages: French and English
