Measuring Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function in Estuarine Mudflats

Event Description:
The course will combine field work with subsequent laboratory analysis and data processing. The majority of techniques on the course can be transferred to any institute with a basic laboratory infra structure but some specialised techniques will also be introduced.

Best field work practice for the estuarine mudflat environment:

  • Microphytobenthic cell collection
  • Sediment sampling for pigment analyses
    (using the cryo-sampling techniques contact core and cryolander which are commercially available at a low price)
  • Spectrophotometric pigment analysis
  • PAM fluorescence
  • Spectral reflectance
  • Macro fauna sampling and sorting
  • Microphytobenthic cell collection
  • Sediment stability (shear vane and Cohesive Strength Meter)
  • Low temperature scanning electron microscopy (with time available to look at own samples)
  • Field safety

MARBEF funding is available for affiliated institutes. MarBEF members are eligable to book the costs of travel, subsistence and fee (whereby the fee is judged to be a part of the subsistence) of (maximally) one participant at their MarBEF account.

Monday Introduction to the Sediment Ecology Research Group, the Eden Estuary and the toolbox of techniques PAM
fluorescence and spectral reflectance: theory and hands on practice using the Walz™ DIVE-PAM and Hansatech™
FMS2 and PEA

Tuesday Visit to local site and field campaign (early start!). The field campaign will involve using the majority of techniques
in situ with experienced personnell on hand to offer advice and tricks of the trade Post field trip sample
preparation e.g. preparing samples for pigment analysis, sieving cores, downloading data, preparing
microphytobenthic samples for microscopy

Wednesday Macrofauna processing Introduction to macrofauna ID

Thursday Introduction to microphytobenthic ID Low temperature scanning electron microscopy

Friday Pigment analysis End of course data assimilation and Questions and Answers session
