MESH workshop: Use of habitat maps for spatial planning and environmental management

Location: Galway, Ireland
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2006-09-27

Event Description:
MESH (Mapping European Seabed Habitats) is an international marine habitat mapping programme supported by the EU INTERREG IIIB fund. MESH aims to produce seabed habitat maps for north-west Europe, and to develop internationsal standards and protocols for seabed mapping studies.

A major [function] of the MESH project is to demonstrate the political, economical and environmental value of marine habitat maps for regional/spatial planning to achieve sustainable marine resource management in the Northwest Europe INTERREG-IIIB area. To this end, each country is organising a workshop to communicate results from the project to-date, to actively seek feedback from those involved in habitat/marine resource mapping and planning and to plan for the future of MESH beyond 2007.

  • provide a forum for exchange of information, experience and identification of needs between those producing habitat maps and the spatial planners and managers using them

  • gain feedback from end-users on the features they require from marine habitat maps and from MESH outputs, including the MESH webGIS maps online service

  • The provisional programme for the workshop can be downloaded here
