Environmental issues of marine fish farming in the Mediterranean

Location: Hellenic Center of Marine Research in Crete

Event Description:
The course will be based on the most recent results obtained in several EU-funded projects, and the topics covered are:

  • A general introduction to marine fish farming in the Mediterranean
  • Effects on water quality
  • Effects on benthic primary producers
  • Organic enrichment of sediments
  • Effects on meio- and macrofauna
  • Monitoring tools
  • Modelling of environmental aspects
  • Mitigation - use of biofilters
  • Socioeconomics

The course will consist of lectures, excursion to a nearby fish farm, field work at the farm, laboratory projects, presentation of own research and of course the project. The course will last for 12 days and take place at the Hellenic Center of Marine Research in Crete. Accommodation is in 2-4 bedroom apartments. The course fee is 300 € and covers course material and accommodation (Food is not included. Self-catering is available).
