2nd LTER-Europe meeting

Location: Palma, Mallorca

Event Description:
This meeting of LTER-Europe representatives will form a special event at the ALTER-Net All Parties' Conference. The full conference is taking place in Mallorca from 5-9 February, and is primarily for ALTER-Net project partners. However, others people involved in shaping European LT(S)ER strategies and in developing a pan-European LT(S)ER network will be invited to attend the LTER-Europe meeting and the rest of the ALTER-Net conference.

Towards an Long-term ecosystem research network in Europe - for biodiversity research and monitoring
Objectives (draft):

a) To review progress on the development of the LTER-Europe Network
b) To provide site, national and European scale examples of how long-term ecosystem research has contributed to biodiversity protection and sustainable use of biodiversity
c) To assess potential of LTER-Europe as a resource for biodiversity policy in Europe. (e.g. in relation to Natura 2000 sites, biodiversity in the wider countryside, indicators, natural resource management and the possible European Ecosystem Assessment)
d) to discuss (or announce) next steps in the development of a formal LTER-Europe Network including Life Watch connections.

Possible Outputs:
a) Press releases on launch of LTER-Europe highlighting some key results from current programmes (distributed nationally and through ALTER-Net's International Press Centre For Biodiversity)
b) A symposium volume: on LTER for biodiversity protection and policy
c) Agreed plan for the development of LTER-Europe.
