Framework Training Course

The main objective of MarBEF Theme 3 – The socio economic importance of Marine Biodiversity – is to develop Decision Support Systems to provide cost-effective strategies for effective management of marine ecosystems. The aim of such systems will be to maximise conservation of biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and sustainable use of marine ecosystems under varying anthropogenic and environmental impacts. In order to manage marine ecosystems for conservation of biodiversity and sustainability of ecosystem functioning we need to understand the economic, social and cultural value of biodiversity across Europe and hence provide a framework and context to integrate natural science with the needs of society and development of management policies. Joint research between natural scientists, economists, and sociologists and socio-anthropologists within the network aims to investigate the total economic and social value of European marine biodiversity, including use and non-use values. Given the large scale coverage of our proposed research there is an urgent and increasing need for cross training of postgraduate students in novel methods, in standardised sampling procedures and in experimental protocols. A key product of MarBEF will be a new generation of professional marine ecosystem scientists for Europe.
