International Workshop on Barcoding of Deep-Sea Organisms

Location: Wilhelmshaven (Germany)
Event Type: Meeting
Event Date: 2008-05-13
End Date: 2008-05-18

Event Description:
International Workshop on Barcoding of Deep-Sea Organisms
German Centre for Marine Biodiversity Research (DZMB), Senckenberg Research Institute, Wilhelmshaven, Germany, May 13th – 18th 2008.

Call for expression of interest:

The Census of Abyssal Marine Life “CeDAMar” in cooperation with the Marine Barcode of Life Initiative “MarBoL” are organizing a workshop to promote molecular barcoding of deep-sea organism and enhance cooperation between the Census of Marine Life and the Barcode of Life projects.

Expression of interest should be send by email to Stefanie Keller (skeller@senckenberg.de) by 1st January 2008, together with a short motivation letter explaining your background and interest in the workshop. Please be aware that the number of participants is restricted by lab space. Only up to 30 people can be invited to participate in the workshop. The list of participants will be available on the CeDAMar web (www.cedamar.org) site by 15 January 2008.

Workshop fee is 50 €. Accommodation, breakfast and lunch will be provided for the duration of the workshop.

Travel expenses of participants who cannot [count] on funding from other sources, may be partially or totally covered by a grant provided by CeDAMar. In this case please submit a short explanatory statement of your expected costs, together with your expression of interest.

We invite you to bring ethanol fixed tissue or specimens for practical training in barcoding your specific taxa. If you already work on CO I sequences, please bring your own data for introductory exercises in the Barcode of Life Database (BoLD). Please let us know for scheduling how much tissue/specimens you would like to bring to the workshop. As you can see in the preliminary program, the practical demonstration will allow you to produce barcode data in collaboration with the big labs in Washington and Guelph.

The workshop is made possible by generous support of the Alfred Sloan Foundation to the Census of Marine Life and the Consortium for the Barcode of Life.
