Plankton bloom dynamics - new insights from molecular and genomic tools

Location: Bremerhaven (Germany)
Event Type: Training Course
Event Date: 2008-06-10
End Date: 2008-06-19

Event Description:
An MGE Summer Course
co-organized with MarBEF

Plankton bloom dynamics - new insights from molecular and genomic tools
10th - 19th of June, 2008
Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Bremerhaven, Germany

General outline
This summer course will address key issues for the molecular study of plankton bloom dynamics, such as the physical and chemical factors determining the development and decline of blooms, the diversity of the organisms involved, the genes expressed and the subsequent changes in the functioning of the pelagic ecosystem.

The course will be organized in a series of lectures and demonstrations set up by prominent scientists working on the different aspects of bloom ecology, from functional genomics to whole ecosystem integration. The areas covered will be phytoplankton, harmful algal blooms, bacteria, viruses and zooplankton.

Target group
18 PhD students (at least in their second year) and post docs from the fields of marine biology and molecular ecology. This course is open to MGE/MarBEF members as well as non-members.

Costs; course, accommodation and meals

• The course fee is paid by the MGE Network for all academics (pre and post doc). Lunches and coffees are included in the course fee as well as the excursion (Saturday the 14th) and the farewell dinner (Thursday the 19th).
• All participants pay their own travel and accommodation.
• Participants are offered to be accommodated at the AWI guest house. The costs for this is approx 150 € for the full period. There are only 14 beds. Additional options will be arranged.

MarBEF sponsors this summer school. This means that MarBEF members can book the costs of max 2 participants to the course up to a max of 1,000 € per person on their MarBEF account.

Deadline for application is April 23, 2008 – EXTENDED!

To apply, please fill in the application form and e-mail to Ulrika Hjelm (, together with a 2-paged CV before April 23, 2008. This information + application form can also be found on the MGE website: under Training & Education.

18 participants will be selected according to the following criteria:

1. Relevance of their PhD /Post Doc project for the course
2. Background and experience of applicant
3. Relation to network

We will aim at mixing people from different research areas and therefore probably no more than one person per institute will be considered. We will also aim for an equal distribution of women and men.

The selected persons will get a notification at the end of April that has to be confirmed within 7 days. We will have a waiting list in case of non-confirmations and cancellations.
