MarBEF training course: Growing and isolating marine microbes; cultured and uncultured

Location: Kalmar University (Sweden)
Event Type: Training Course
Event Date: 2008-06-09
End Date: 2008-06-20

Event Description:
Significant knowledge of marine bacteria has been gained by culture-independent methods. Still many approaches require
microorganisms in culture. The aim of this course is to provide insight in the ancient art of culturing bacteria.

Hands on practice will include:

• effect of substrate quality examined in batch cultures,
• effect of temperature examined in continuous sea water cultures,
• dilution to extinction cultures,
• autotrophic growth,
• substrate gradient cultures.

Daily lectures will focus on three general subjects:

• energetics of bacteria, including N2-fixation,
• prokaryotic growth requirements,
• behavior of microorganisms.

Each student will have the opportunity to give a short presentation about his/her research plan and results. The course is believed to
be of interest for graduate students and researchers in molecular biology and microbial ecology.

Teachers: Åke Hagström, Lasse Riemann, Jarone Pinhassi, Catherine Legrand (Kalmar University), Frede Thingstad (University of Bergen), Jens Harder (Max-Planck.Institute for Marine Microbiology), Lucas Stal (Netherlands Institute of Ecology)

This is a full-time course, arrival expected June 8. Accommodation and meals are included in the course fee of 800 !.
