MarBEF workshop on “The impact of changes in the abundance of marine [top] predators on ecosystem functions”

Location: St Andrews University, Fife (Scotland)
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2008-04-29
End Date: 2008-05-01

Event Description:
There is growing concern about the consequences of changes in the size structure of marine foodwebs for biodiversity and ecosystem function. This workshop will focus on one particular aspect of this concern: the impact of changes in the abundance of [top] predators. We will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the methods that are currently available, or being developed, to assess the impacts of [top] predators on marine ecosystems, and to predict the likely consequences of changes in their abundance. The first day of the workshop will focus on a review of the model frameworks currently available, the second day will focus on the availability of data for parameterising these models, and the final day on the development of potential research proposals. Confirmed participants include Julia Blanchard (Cefas, Lowestoft, UK), Simon Greenstreet (FRS, Aberdeen, UK), Mariano Koen-Alonso (Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada), and Eva Plaganyi-Lloyd (University of Cape Town).
