Marine Taxonomy Workshop, a workshop on biodiversity informatics for marine species taxonomic experts

Location: Oostende (Belgium)
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2008-06-20
End Date: 2008-06-21

Event Description:

This workshop is sponsored by MarBEF and jointly organised by MarBEF Workpackage 1: Data Integration and Workpackage 2: Taxonomic Clearing System.

The Flanders Marine Institute - Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee (VLIZ) is happy to host the Marine Taxonomy Workshop in the premises of the IOC Project Office for IODE, Oostende from 20-21 June 2008. VLIZ hosts and maintains the database of the World Register of Marine Species.

We have made great progress with the World and European Registers of Marine Species, and related activities by using side-meetings at other events and email. To create more momentum we need to more closely involve and energise the people who should be involved. A face-to-face meeting between the editors and data management team is thus planned for 20-21st June 2008 at VLIZ.

This workshop is for the taxonomic experts who validate marine species names and information in online databases. Their efforts are enabling the availability of authoritative quality controlled information on marine species names and associated information that contribute to MarBEF, EDIT, PESI, WoRMS, GBIF, OBIS and Species 2000 Catalogue of Life.

The workshop outcomes will include:

-increased enthusiasm and know-how amongst taxonomic experts as to online publication processes and benefits
-deadlines for progress on WoRMS, interoperability and our initiatives
-multi-author paper on known and knowable marine species started

It may also include side meetings of major-taxon editors on 19th June 2008. Editors planning such meetings should contact Ward Appeltans.

This is a rare opportunity for the taxonomic editors to meet each other, and meet the data management team. However, due to a limited budget and space we will have to restrict the number of participants to this workshop. We will invite more people in the coming weeks depending on the allocation of our budget. Please contact Mark Costello and Ward Appeltans if you are interested in this workshop.

For those that are invited, it is important to:

-confirm if you can attend or not,
-if you can, please provide an estimate of your total travel costs, and
-complete the workshop registration and hotel booking forms (see website).

Your hotel and travel costs will be reimbursed by VLIZ using MarBEF funds on provision of receipts (claim form). This workshop is also endorsed by MarBEF, which means that participants employed by one of the MarBEF project partners can allocate 1,000 EUR on their own budget to cover T&S. Please check with your MarBEF responsible person at your institute before making any reservations.

Please send the registration form and the estimation of your travel costs to Mark Costello and Ward Appeltans. The hotel form should be sent to the tourist office in Ostend, who deals with the hotel bookings, not VLIZ.
