Workshop on Chemical Ecology as a Driver for Blue Technology and Bioprospecting

Location: Ischia (Italy)
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2008-10-29
End Date: 2008-10-31

Event Description:
The term 'marine bioprospecting' is often used to describe the process of collecting marine biota for natural product screening leading to drug discovery. This is a relatively new field and therefore the number of commercial products is far smaller than those obtained from terrestrial organisms. This field could benefit from a greater understanding of the natural [function] of these secondary metabolites so as to find new applications for these potentially important natural drugs.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists interested in chemical ecology, blue technology and bioprospecting with the [view] of positioning themselves for future projects on this subject.

The Aberdeen Declaration has called for urgent action by the European Commission and the Member States to further develop and enhance a partnership with the appropriate stakeholders to initiate in 2008 a comprehensive and integrated European Marine and Maritime Science, Research, Technology and Innovation Strategy.

The outcome of the workshop, which will see the combined efforts of all three MarBEF core themes, will be to generate a position paper on how chemical ecology and marine bioprospecting can address this strategy.
