MarBEF Workshop on Resolving Species in Marine Protists

Location: Station Zoologique, Villefranche-sur-Mer
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2008-12-04
End Date: 2008-12-05

Event Description:
The Observatoire Océanologique de Villefranche (France), the Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry team will organise a MarBEF workshop on the concept of species in marine protists and the different techniques applied to their study.

Introduction
Marine protists form the base of many marine food webs, for example, dominating the phytoplankton and zooplankton in pelagic systems. Most protists have been defined using morphological characteristics. However based on sequence retrieval, there are many undescribed, entirely new groups of marine protists of unknown ecological functions. Recent technological advances, in particular that of 'pyrosequencing' promise to yield a great deal of data in the form of sequences retrieved from natural samples. Relating sequence data to species is a major problem in the case of marine protists at present and it is a problem which will increase in importance dramatically in the near future. The workshop will focus on establishing inventory of the state of the science for different protist 'groups' (dinoflagellates, diatoms, ciliates, etc.) and also the state of the existing sequence data bases with regard to protists. We will also attempt to establish direct contact between proponents and opponents of the emerging pyrosequencing technology.

Registration should be done by email before 5 November in order to allow us to set the program and make travel arrangements for the participants.

Number of participants - 20: Researchers (12) & Students (8) of Marplan project Institutions
