Sea change: securing a future for Europe’s seas - international conference on marine protected areas

Location: Park Plaza Riverbank, London, UK
Event Type: Meeting
Event Date: 2009-12-08
End Date: 2009-12-09

Event Description:
The conference is designed to stimulate debate and collaboration amongst European countries to ensure that we work together to deliver a successful network of Marine Protected Areas, regardless of administrative borders.

It will focus on:

• ensuring that MPAs deliver the right outcomes
• sharing best practice in current MPA management across European waters
• developing partnerships amongst neighbouring Member States
• reviewing how MPAs can make a contribution to achieving Good Environmental Status as required under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
• improvements to the co-ordination of activities, such as fisheries, that require European-wide management.

This conference offers a compelling programme of presentations, panel discussions and workshops. The UK Government Minister responsible for the marine environment, Huw Irranca-Davies MP, will address the event. Speakers are coming from Denmark, The European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, the UK and the USA.

Delegates are invited from the fields of marine management, policy making, conservation, science, NGOs, industry, the voluntary sector and Government. Non EU countries with European marine interests are also invited along with OSPAR, HELCOM and Barcelona regional seas convention representatives.
