2nd Conference of the European Consortium for the Barcode of Life (ECBOL2): 2010 International Year of Biodiversity

Location:  Braga, Portugal
Event Type: Meeting
Event Date: 2010-06-02
End Date: 2010-06-04

Event Description:
The European Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) and the Centre for Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA), University of Minho (Portugal), invite you to join us in Braga from 2 to 4 of June 2010 for the 2nd ECBOL conference, under the focal theme of the 2010 United Nations’ International Year of Biodiversity.

ECBOL was established as a result of the initiative of EDIT (European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy, EU Network of Excellence), and as a follow up of the meeting “DNA Barcoding in Europe” held in Leiden in 2007 (3-5 October).

Since the first ECBOL meeting in 2007, much progress has been seen in the Barcode of Life initiative. DNA barcoding is currently considered a “fast rising field” due to the steady increase in the number of scientific publications related to this topic that has been published since 2004. The recent publication of the recommended plant barcodes by the CBOLs Plant Working Group, will surely contribute to rise even more the publication numbers, and the overall impact of this initiative in the near future.

As a fortunate coincidence, 2010 International Year of Biodiversity will also see the formal start up of a major DNA barcoding programme involving more than 25 countries - the International Barcode of Life (iBOL). iBOL will produce a library of DNA barcodes for 500 thousand eukaryotic species and 5 million specimens that will constitute the backbone of a new species identification system.

With the world’s largest repository of biological collections and a significant share of the taxonomic knowledge, Europe is a fundamental partner of the Barcode of Life. An effective and extensive contribution from Europe depends on a continuously improved coordination effort among European partners. Within 2 years of the first meeting, ECBOL2 will provide the opportunity for strengthening the implementation of DNA barcoding in Europe and to further explore interactions between European partners and institutions with the barcoding community across the world.

Concurrently, it will be also a timely occasion to contribute to further raise awareness to the crisis of biodiversity loss, and to discuss the role of the Barcode of Life to help countering this problem.

We look forward for you to join us at this exciting meeting in Braga.
