Theme 1 – Workshop on deep-sea and open ocean reference sites

Location: University of Olso
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2004-06-30
End Date: 2004-07-01

Event Description:
Goal: Identify deep-sea and ocean pelagic sites equivalent to LTBR coastal sites proposed by BIOMARE.

The goal of MARBEF is:
MARBEF will build on identified monitoring strategies to track changes in biodiversity using standardised methodologies and appropriate indicator species. With continuing climate change, we anticipate further changes in distribution patterns and we will develop the predictive ability to forecast the responses of marine biodiversity to climate change, using geographical patterns in combination with temporal changes using, for example, glacial-interglacial transitions as proxies. We will focus initially on the LTBR (Long Term Biodiversity Research) sites identified in the EU-BIOMARE Concerted Action supplemented by additional deep sea, pelagic and experimental sites, and will prioritise the identification of newly discovered biota at these sites, including invasive species and new species.

Overall objective. Selection of deep-sea and ocean pelagic sites to be added to the list LTBR (long term biodiversity research) sites proposed by BIOMARE, equivalent. The objective will be to produce a list of deep-sea and ocean pelagic sites to be included.
