The 40th European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS)

Location: Vienna, Austria
Event Type: Meeting
Event Date: 2005-08-21
End Date: 2005-08-25

Event Description:
The themes will be

1. Remote and inaccessible marine habitats: Papers are invited on studies dealing with marine environments which require an exceptional personal or technical effort, such as sea caves, wave swept shores, remote islands and seamounts, polar seas, continental slope and deep sea.
2. Advances in underwater observation and experimentation: Papers are invited which report on the application of new approaches and techniques which allow to follow, document and manipulate processes in the natural environment, from the intertidal to the deep sea, including studies using SCUBA, submersibles, ROVs, landers or long-term-observatories. Purely technical papers will be considered only in exceptional cases.

The choice of topic is in recognition of the contributions of Rupert Riedl, eminent marine scientist, who will celebrate his 80th birthday in 2005. We hope that many of you will find time to join us in celebrating this date.

A website is in operation with information on the conference and on-line forms for registration and abstract submission are available under http://www.promare.at/embs40. Please visit our site.

Information about the IECB can be found under http://www.univie.ac.at/iecb, on the
Marine Biology Section under http://www.univie.ac.at/marine-biology and about ProMare under http://www.promare.at.

MarBEF and MARS want to give full support to the 40th European Marine Biology Symposium in Vienna, Austria (http://www.promare.at/embs40/), organized by Joerg Ott, and a special round table discussion at the EMBS, organized by Nando Boero and Erik Bonsdorff, in order to bring a closer connection between EMBS, MARS and MarBEF.

MarBEF will fund:

- 2) all MarBEF members are allowed to book the Travel and Subsistence costs of 2 participants to the EMBS symposium at their MarBEF account.

In addition to MarBEF also the Marine Research Stations Network MARS will fund two MARS-awards for poster contributions (www.marsnetwork.org):

- first prize of 250 Euro for the best poster contribution on a topic involving Marine Biology,
- second prize of 100 Euro.
