Theme2 Workshop: Ecosystem stability vs. marine biodiversity: Assessing the evidence

Location: Tavira, Portugal
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2005-03-16
End Date: 2005-03-18

Event Description:
The increasing rate at which species are lost from natural habitats has renewed the interest into one of the most classical paradigms of ecology: the relationship between biodiversity and the stability of assemblages and ecological processes. Recent empirical and theoretical studies have generated contrasting evidence about the direction, strength and pervasiveness of this relationship and most of our current understanding is limited to specific habitats. This workshop will bring together scientists working in different areas of marine ecology, from plankton to benthos, to address issues at three levels of scientific inquiry: (1) patterns in space and time, (2) experimental analysis of cause-effect linkages and (3) modelling. Although the discussion will focus primarily on marine habitats, it will integrate insights form terrestrial studies. The aim is to lay down the foundations of a long-term, large-scale effort of European research on the ecosystem stability vs. marine biodiversity relationship.
