Biodiversity Science and Governance: Today's choice for tomorrow's life

Event Description:
The Conference Biodiversity : Science and Governance is part of the ongoing global effort to curb the loss of biodiversity by 2010 and ensure the long term conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, as well as the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits that genetic resources can yield.

The Conference aims to contribute to and strengthen the ongoing global processes steered by the Convention on Biological Diversity, other relevant international conventions, international organizations and programmes.

Leading scientists, policy makers and representatives of civil society will gather to take stock of the current knowledge, shortcomings and controversial issues concerning biodiversity and its management. The debate will help inform politicians and decision-makers about biodiversity issues ahead of 2010. It will highlight the link between biodiversity and sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and the Millennium Development Goals.

The Conference will focus on :

  • changes in biodiversity, assessment tools and methodologies ;
  • social impact of change, particulary concerning the exploitation of and trade in renewable resources, agriculture, fisheries, forestry ;

biodiversity governance in the context of the 2010 target and the Millennium Development Goals, with an emphasis on legal, economic and political aspects.

Moreover, the conference Biodiversity : Science and Governance intend to sensitise [public] opinion about scientific and social issues connected to biodiversity.
