Theme 3 - Workshop on Decision Support System and Wrap Up

Location: University of Gdansk - Poland
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2005-06-27
End Date: 2005-06-28

Event Description:
Objective: Inter-disciplinary review of decision support systems, and their utilisation by user groups and development develop of a research agenda to optimise such systems for use in the marine environment.

Participants: Primarily sociologists and economists, a small number of user groups
Target number of participants: 20-40
Output: Agreed research agenda to optimise decision support systems for use in the marine environment

This workshop will review the different management tools, available to and used by marine environmental managers and other user groups including analysis of the advantages and deficiencies of current systems. From this workshop a research agenda will be developed to optimise such systems for use in the marine environment.

For sustainable utilization of marine economic development should not exceed resource thresholds. In order to achieve this it is essential that environmental managers have a good idea of how marine biodiversity and economics will react to different pressures at different times, and the risks and confidence limits associated with these estimates. Such knowledge will be essential to develop management strategies for the sustainable use of marine ecosystems and to mitigate environmental degradation. An achievable goal of MARBEF is to develop models such as decision support systems and scenario analysis for use as management tools. These are required to investigate complementary and conflicting uses of marine biodiversity. Such development will require evaluation of multi-criteria analyses and their utilisation by user groups as well as the design of consistent scenarios to generate environmental, economic and social indicators suitable for use in a multiple criteria evaluation framework.
