Theme 3 - Workshop on Integrating Disciplines

Location: University of South Denmark
Event Type: Workshop
Event Date: 2005-05-17
End Date: 2005-05-18

Event Description:
Objective: Bring together all user groups to undertake an integrating disciplines workshop to ensure a common aim for the Network of Excellence is understood.

Participants: All user groups, environmental managers, natural scientists and socio-economists
Target number of participants: 40-50
Output: Review paper for publication

Currently there is little communication between natural scientists, socio-economists and environmental managers, all of whom are working on the marine environment. MARBEF theme 3 will initiate new communication links between these groups as well as building upon existing links enabling these groups to identify and discuss areas of common interest and gaps in knowledge. Such dialogue may drastically alter the manner or level of data collection in future research for the purposes of cross-disciplinary comparability. Building upon workshop 3, this workshop will bring together all user groups, environmental managers, natural scientists and socio-economists to undertake an integrating disciplines workshop to ensure a common aim for the Network of Excellence is understood. There is great discrepancy between the ecological, social and economic disciplines in terms of the terminology, and methodologies used to collect data and its subsequent analysis. Therefore a primary objective of this workshop would be to educate those from other disciplines and to exchange the experience of those that have attempted to cross these inter-disciplinary boundaries. This will also be an opportunity to identify areas which are of particular interest, to agree on the gaps which need to be filled and to generate a longer-term research plan and to co-programme effort.
