MarBEF institutes can at the end of the MarBEF NoE award a study grant to a European student enrolling the Erasmus Mundus Master Course Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC). This course is considered as one of the outcomes of the MarBEF network.

The EMBC management board is happy to announce that the first cohort of 32 EMBC students started last October. This group of students originate from 22 countries. In order to complete their master successfully, all students must write a thesis in the field of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.

The Erasmus Mundus Master of science in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation
(EMBC) has recently started the applications for the academic year 2009-2010. Students who have interest in this course, can fill in an application file on the EMBC website (http://embc.marbef.org) by 31 december 2008.

Both European and non-European students can now register for the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC). There are also grants for visiting academic scholars (non-EU).

Professor John Gray passed away on Sunday 21st of October at the age of 66. John was a leading benthic ecologist and was instrumental in moving benthic ecology and studies of pollution from observation to hypothesis testing.

Yesterday, the Commission adopted a Communication setting out its vision for an Integrated Maritime Policy for the EU, together with a detailed action plan setting out an ambitious work programme for the years ahead.

During the MarBEF General Assembly held last week in Gdansk an All Taxa Biodiversity Inventories + Monitoring (ATBI+Ms) project was proposed as a joint action between the MarBEF ("Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning") and EDIT ("European Distributed Institute for Taxonomy") Networks of Excellence.

The General Assembly meeting of MarBEF will focus on the results obtained by the consortium so far. Poster sessions are planned on Monday and Tuesday. These sessions will provide a good opportunity to show the results and highlights of project(s) relevant to the MarBEF community and the EC.

Also at high policy level the importance of biodiversity is recognised. At the latest G8 Environment Ministers Meeting in Potsdam, 15-17 March 2007, the Ministers have adopted a declaration emphasizing the role of Biodiversity.

A two day training course covering communication in a broad range of contexts, from writing popular articles and giving broadcast media interviews to preparing [public] lectures and using new media such as blogging and podcasting is to be orgainised in the coming months. This course may be of particularly interest to those who have put their name forward as a media contact for their RMP. MarBEF is committed to increasing SMEs end users' awareness of biodiversity, and their use of biodiversity in broad terms in their activities. But as a first step we need to identify who the marine biodiversity related SMEs in Europe are. We are therefore sending out a questionnaire to all MarBEF partners.
