Abstract
The higher classification used in the checklist of European nemertean species and genera follows the proposal given by Sundberg (1991) This was modified to include Sundberg & Hylbom’s (1994) conclusion, based on their phylogenetic study of the anoplan subclasses Archi- and Palaeonemertea, that the retention of the Archinemertea as a separate taxon could no longer be supported. Nemertean genera listed as archinemerteans in Gibson’s (1995) checklist of the nemertean genera and species of the world are included below in the Palaeonemertea. Since 1995 several species of nemerteans have been subjected to taxonomic revision and a number of new genera and species have been established. The present checklist has to a large extent been compiled from information given by Gibson (1994, 1995), but is supplemented by the work of Berg & Gibson (1996), Cantell (1996, 1998), Chernyshev (1995), Envall (1996), Frutos et al. (1998) and Senz (1995, 1996a, b, 1997).
