MarBEF Procedures Database
Introduction
One of MarBEF's major aims involves the integration of existing and new data to address and answer 'larger questions' which could not be achieved by partners operating in isolation.
Disparate datasets are the building blocks of this work and the integration of data presents significant challenges.
For example, methodologies can differ, both between laboratories and over time and this may have implications for the comparability of data. We therefore need to ensure that the differences between datasets are real and not simply an artefact of the different methods used.
To aid this integration the QA and Data Management work packages have developed the MarBEF Procedures database. Its primary aim is to store information about the methods used in the collection of individual datasets through a link to the MarBEF Meta-database. This will allow researchers to compare the methods used in the acquisition of datasets of interest.
In addition to this primary aim the database will also:
- allow researchers to identify available methods and to identify gaps
- aid in the development of international standards/MarBEF procedures
- encourage greater harmonisation of methodology
- allow individuals to see how their procedures compare with others (including international guidelines e.g. ISO CEN, ICES, OSPAR etc)
- spread knowledge and best practice (Network of Excellence)
