Etymology "Die von Dujardin bei St. Malo entdeckte Echinoderesart habe ich Echinoderes Dujardinii benannt."
[=I have named the species of Echinoderes discovered by Dujardin at St. Malo as Echinoderes Dujardinii.] [The name Dujardin was Latinized to Dujardinius with its genitive Dujardinii.] [details]
Spelling The species name E. dujardinii represents the genitive case of the Latinized name Dujardinius derived from the person's name Dujardin, who first described a kinorhynch. This is in accordance with ICZN (Articles 31.1.2. and 31.1.3.). The name E. dujardinii has been used consistently ever since, so this original writing with -ii has to be preserved (ICZN, Article 33.4. Use of -i for -ii and vice versa, and other alternative spellings, in subsequent spellings of species-group names.).
Lapsus calami, Echinoderes dujardini instead of E. dujardinii: Remane (1929, 1936), Higgins (1971), Merriman & Corwin (1973), Nyholm & Nyholm (1976a, 1982). [details]
Spelling The species was originally published with a capital letter, which does not agree with the ICZN (Article 28.). Correction of the spelling to a small letter does not require a new author of a species (ICZN, Article 50.4.). Therefore, the same species with the same author would appear twice in WoRMS, one written with a capital letter, the other one with a small letter. It was decided to provide only the name with the small letter and to add this comment in order to explain the situation. [details]
