Alien species The original distribution area of Orchestia cavimana stretches along the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea and the east of the Mediterranean Sea. How this species – that occurs in both fresh and brackish water – reached Belgium is unknown. However it is certain that the many (fresh) water channels in Belgians neighbouring countries sped up the species distribution process. The species was first observed in Belgium on 26 March 1927, after which the species quickly became a natural inhabitant of both Belgian's fresh and light brackish waters, especially in the rivers the Yser, the Scheldt, and the Meuse.
