Distribution Little can be said about the origin of the present species. The fact that no species of Automate has ever been reported from the Mediterranean is an argument in favour of the supposition that A. branchialis actually is an Indo-West Pacific species, which entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. On the other hand, the fact that until now relatively little attention has been paid to the smaller bottom dwelling Crustacea of the Mediterranean, does not exclude the possibility « ,that the new species is a true Mediterranean form.
