Diagnosis Test planispirally enrolled, involute to slightly evolute, biumbilicate, sides somewhat flattened, chambers inflated and margin lobulate; wall thin, finely to coarsely agglutinated, exterior smoothly finished; aperture an elongate equatorial slit at the base of the apertural face. Cretaceous to Holocene; cosmopolitan. (Loeblich & Tappan, 1987, Foraminiferal Genera and Their Classification) [details]
Grammatical gender ICZN article 30.1.4.4. stipulates: "A compound genus-group name ending in the suffix -ites, -oides, -ides, -odes, or -istes is to be treated as masculine unless its author, when establishing the name, stated that it had another gender or treated it as such by combining it with an adjectival species-group name in another gender form."
Cushman (1910) did not give any indication about the gender of Haplophragmoides but quoted the type species as H. canariense d'Orbigny (p. 99) and then in the description as H. canariensis (p. 101). All the species described by other authors and considered by Cushman to belong to Haplophragmoides were quoted with their specific epithet in their original gender. H. sphaeriloculum the only new species instated by Cushman in 1910 indicates a neuter genus. Later Cushman published other new species of the genus Haplophragmoides using specific epithets in all the genders (mainly feminine and neuter).
Other authors who have published new Haplophragmoides species, have used all the possible genders (mainly masculine).
Considering the uncertainty of Cushman's intentions, the WoRMS editors are applying the general ICZN rule and consider Haplophragmoides to be a masculine genus. [details]Unreviewed
