Etymology Grube (1855) gives the Greek words derivation of Notopygos as (in German) Rucken + After or (in English) dorsal anus. In the Latin diagnosis it is "ano dorsuali" [details]
Grammatical gender Grube (1855) appears to treat Notopygos as feminine, as he uses 'crinita', and later adds 'ornata' as another species. Subsequent authors appear divided in conforming to this, as both feminine and masculine adjectival epithets were published. Horst (1911) clearly regarded the genus as masculine as he 'corrected' originals. Some modern authors continue to use original masculine endings as well as the feminine ones, apparently oblivious to mandatory gender agreement. This certainly simplifies tracking, although incorrect practice. [details]
Publication date In Grube (1850:288) both Notopygos and N. crinita are nomina nuda. Grube indicates N. crinita as nov. spec. but there is no description. In Grube (1855:93) there is a Latin diagnosis of both genus and species. Neither is indicated as new, but this is the date the names become available for nomenclature. Hartman (1959 catalogue) and others correctly use 1855 for the genus date. [details]
