Identification Topsent's (1892, 1904) use of the combination Petrosia variabilis is based on his misapplied concept of the North Australian Schmidtia variabilis Ridley, 1884. It is unlikely that the deep-sea species of Petrosia found near the Azores belongs to the same species. Until the erection of a new name for the Azores species we employ the name variabilis sensu Topsent, 1892 to it. [details]
