Nomenclature The names Tornatella pusilla Forbes, 1844, described from 100 fathoms depth in "Lycia and Naxia" (now SW Turkey) is nomenclaturally and taxonomically distinct from Tornatella pusilla MacGillivray, 1843, described from shallow water in Scotland. It is the former name that has become in commn use for a deep water species now known as Japonacteon pusillus even if the name is sometimes misattributed to MacGillivray, 1843 (e.g. Smriglio & Mariottini, 1996). This poses a nomenclatural problem since MacGillivray's name (most likely a synonym of Actaeon tornatilis (Linnaeus, 1758)) preoccupies Forbes' name. A ruling of ICZN or a declaration of "nomen protectum" of Forbes' name would be needed to stabilize the case. [details]
