Synonymy Many authors have treated L. arcticus as a synonym of Leptochiton asellus (Gmelin, 1791); others conbsidered it as a deep-sea form of L. asellus. Recent trend is to treat it as a separate species. However, the two species are definitely closely related, and it is not always possible to know which species is referred to in the literature.
