Authority The name Echinodermata was coined by Klein (1734), a pre-Linnaean work, and as such is not available. So far, Bruguière (1791) was considered the first work that made this name available (Hyman 1955). Recently, Stokes (2021), indicated that there is an earlier work which made the name available, namely the reprint of Klein's 1734 work in 1778 (Klein 1778). According to Stokes' conclusions, whilst Klein’s work (1778) is not available for names of families, genera or species because of the lack of consistent application of binominal nomenclature, it is available for names of taxa above the family level (ICZN Art. 11.4: "Consistent application of binominal nomenclature. The author must have consistently applied the Prin?ciple of Binominal Nomenclature [Art. 5.1] in the work in which the name or nomenclatural act was published; however, this Article does not apply to the availability of names of taxa at ranks above the family level.”).
